'Carrefour, Carrefour, we love to serve...!'
Maiyuu and I went to the Carrefour megastore in Pra Ram 4 yesterday for our big shop. A heavy wet-season downpour started as we made our way there by taxi.
I watched as traders and protesters (you can go hardly anywhere in Bangkok without seeing protesters) raced about, yanking at tents and covering things up.
They were soaked, their T-shirts clinging to their skin.

Outside Carrefour, Maiyuu handed the fare to the driver, and made a sprint for cover.
I have never seen him run so fast. One moment he was sitting beside me, the next he was inside the front doors of the megastore, waving. How can it be?
'You move like lighting. I didn't know you could go so fast,' I said after joining him.
Maiyuu laughed.

At 4.50pm, we were standing at the cash register when the cashier told me it was still too early to buy alcohol.
'You'll have to wait another 10 minutes,' she said.
Thai law limits the hours in which I can buy alcohol from licenced providers such as Carrefour.
I had put a bottle of whisky in the basket, thinking I could pay for the thing without trouble, but I had forgotten the selling-hour restrictions.

From memory, I can buy from 11am to 2pm. Then the abstinence hours kick in, and I can't buy it again until 5pm.
Small, unlicensed outlets still sell, of course, but I wanted to buy it with the rest of our shopping, as it was more convenient.
I didn't mind the wait, as I knew I could look forward to something else at 5pm.
That's the hour when Carrefour's young service staff sing for their customers.
They line up in long rows, down one side of the store, and in front by the cash registers, to perform their corporate anthem.
'Carrefour, Carrefour,' they sing.
Actually, I can't remember the words. I had seen them perform it once before.
They wave their arms like cheerleaders. They also swivel about on the spot.
For the staff, this must be the most horrid moment of the day - when shoppers turn to stare at their awkward singing and dancing.

The song lasts for about five minutes. The red-shirted staff who formed a line in front of the check-out area were led by a tall, slender figure who looked perfectly gay.
He was the only one who moved with any conviction.
The others, including young men on rollerskates who pack groceries, smiled awkwardly and tried to avoid meeting our gaze.
'Carrefour, we love to serve...'
Next time, I shall take a camera. Would they mind?

They love finding ways for awful jobs to be worse, don't they? lol.
"led by a tall, slender figure who looked perfectly gay"
LOL that line made me laugh..and yes I suppose they would be slightly embarassed if you took photos of them...
But then again..you never know, they might like it..
"led by a tall, slender figure who looked perfectly gay"
That sounds like one of my best friends :P
They have videos on Youtube of the store. Song too. Bring your camera and have fun. Watched a video of a large rat run across the meat counter too. Yuck.
Abstinence hours? For me that's when I am asleep.
In my part of the world we can get a bottle between the hours of 7:30AM and midnight. Bars open till 2AM if you miss the curfew. In Miami the bars close from 5AM to 7AM for a hosing out. Sometime that is good and sometime that is bad. Driving home at 6AM against the morning rush hour of commuters is a tactical nightmare.
Malomker: Well put. Why do they have to make a horrible job even worse for young ones trying to make ends meet? It is not fair.
Orn, Kevo: He looked perfectly gay, but not particularly good looking. The best looking guys tend to be straight, or am I imagining it?
Neil: I used to stay up until all hours, but now that Maiyuu and I live in more 'settled' surroundings, I am in bed before 1am on workdays, and often before 11pm on days off. So if I don't buy alcohol in the daylight hours, it doesn't get bought at all.
Looks like the little dance which MK have at every hour?? Kinda cute i think...something refreshing...

Your dishy lad cant buy a bottle? Put a basket on his bike and tell him to steer clear the pot-holes. Luvvly-jubbly keeping the house stocked with teacakes and noodles. Time to teach him to say "Beefeater"
Thailover: I didn't realise these company dances in front of customers were so widespread. They have a mesmerising effect...after watching the young people dance at Carrefour, I can see why live dance shows can be such fun (I haven't been to one in years).
Neil: He bought me a bottle last week - and yes, I think he did go on his bike.
These awful floor shows are not uncommon, especially in tourist trap theme restaurants:

One of my clients does this stuff, a staff member is a friend (Mexican of course) I went there on my Birthday...I did not think anyone knew..but I got "the works" ..kinda embarrassing.
The cake was good but I would not let them do it the "Mexican way" -after you blow out and remove the candles they push your face into it.
Thank you...I enjoyed the Last Dance at Johnny Rockets the most (video No 2).
I wouldn't let them plunge my face in the cake either.
Oh my goodness, Maiyuu with such speed.......have you seen the film Twilight? Watch your neck. lol
Something I've noticed over the years is that you assume the only guys out there who are gay are the queeny-looking ones. This is far, far from being the case.
I suppose the BF bought more ingredients for creamy cakes and other desserts. Could I ask you NOT to publish fotos of them as I have put on 10 kilos reading your blog lately. :) - Ian
Looks like actor David Carradine chose to make his exit in Bangkok
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/2009/06/04/2009-06-04_kungfu_star_and_kill_bill_actor_david_carradine.html
Note the comments about Carradine and suspicions as to why he was in BKK. This, is why I don't discuss my involvement there with any but long time friends.
Too bad, all around.
May he rest in Peace. :(
I read your post you posted yesterday. Just wondering why its being taken off from your blog.
