Cucumber smile, Wilko's fudge, Alan Bennett's naughty telegram, high hopes for AF6's Mack, boat lost at sea

Chef Maiyuu's pork fried rice with a bright cucumber smile, which was waiting for me when I came home from work last night.

He didn't think it was anything special - 'It's just fried rice!' - but I like it, because of the effort which went into the presentation.

Ye Olde English Fudge, by regular reader (and confectionary fan) Wilko. It looks delicious...I would love to be able to reach out and take a piece, but technology, unfortunately, does not yet permit.

Here is Wilko's recipe:

Ye Olde English Fudge

397g can condensed milk
150ml milk 5floz
450g (llb) demerara sugar
115g (4oz) butter
Vanilla essence a few drops
18cm tin greased, lined

Slowly heat all ingredients in a large pan til sugar dissolved

Bring to boil, then reduce heat, stirring constantly for 10 min

It is ready when a tiny piece forms a ball in cold water

Take off heat, beat until thick and grainy. This may take a while but it's a good work out.

Pour in tin, allow to cool and send a piece or two or three to me in the post.

The 12 contestants from the sixth season of the Academy Fantasia talent quest/reality show entered AF House last night.

This year, I have decided to spare you regular coverage of the competition, even though Maiyuu and I shall be watching it. We enjoy the show, as it gives us something new to talk about.

However, I am aware that overseas-based readers who can't watch the show themselves would probably find all the fuss mystifying, and possibly even annoying.

I have identified one potential gay candidate among the 12: dream hunter No 6, Mack Wiradon Wangcharoenporn (แม็ค วีรดนย์ หวังเจริญพร), pictured here.

Bangkok-raised Mack, 23, graduated with a bachelors degree in interior design from the city's Raffles Design Institute. What sturdy evidence do I base my gay assessment on? He has fine hands, and dresses too well to be straight (though you can't see wat he's wearing in this pic, sorry).

I am reading gay English author/homourist/actor Alan Bennett's Untold Stories, my first attempt at an autobiography-cum-diary in years.

These days, I have little patience for fiction. I am happier in the company of biographies, autobiographies, and diaries, even though they take longer to read.

Listen to Leeds-born, Oxford-educated Bennett (Beyond the Fringe, Talking Heads, History Boys) narrates his yarn Telling Tales, about a fatal argument over a dry biscuit, here; or watch him on stage, sending a naughty telegram via the operator, here.

For some of us, living in Thailand can be too sweet or unusual an adventure: it can be hard to get off the boat when it arrives back at home port.

I know that once I hit 50, my chances of getting a job in the West will be almost negligible, and that unless I go back to resume my career before then, I will find it hard to make ends meet in my post-retirement years.

However, I also know that I love Mr Maiyuu, and enjoy being around Thais. What to do? Listen to moody music, grab a good book, and switch off, perhaps.

Postscript: Soundtrack of the day is the theme for Malena, starring Monica Belluci. Music by Ennio Morricone.

Phew, l'm back. lt's been a very hot day and l've wilted. How do you do it? We're terrible, one whiff of over 25 degrees and the UK grinds to a halt......or is it just me!!!!
The recipe is in the Prozzie curry unveiled, Supermarket discovery post.
Hardest thing is opening the can of Condensed Milk and putting it in the saucepan without eating it. ;) l ate 3 tsps full and licked the lid. Ha.
Alan Bennett is very open and writes from the heart. l don't know his work well but l know it hits home. Very 'this is how it is' live with it.
His Tv programmes are well worth getting, especially 'talking heads'. They are gripping.

Thank you. I shall post amend this post to include the recipe, and flag it in today's post as well, for those readers who missed it.

Thank you also for the response on Alan Bennett. Getting reader feedback on these things...otherwise it's just me urging readers to take a look at this or that, which gets dull.

Some readers seem unsure what to think, judging by the general lack of responses lately. I shall have to whip up a bit of interest.

As for the heat, the BF and I have taken to putting on the air in the main room during the day lately.

Our power bill here is lower than at the old place, where the air con machine was old.

We also have air con in our bedrooms, which we switch on just before bed.

I have been wondering when the cookbook is going to come out. I would love to buy Choa a copy. He cooks quite well but nothing to this level.. I get hungry each time I read.

Thanks,
john

Is there any chance to do any creative investing in your western home country, and use the gains to live it up in Thailand? The exchange rate makes it an attractive option, causing me think seriously of retiring in Thailand ;)
I am just beginning to invest in real-estate, taking advantage of the market while it's at a low point.
Good luck with whatever plan you choose!

TOQ: Thank you. If I could persuade Maiyuu to sit down and write out his recipes, I would...but he is much more interested in cooking than writing.

In a past life I had a GF who was also an excellent cook, but once again she cooked up many dishes from her head...she seldom had any need to write things down.

Kevo33: I would be incompetent at managing investments, as I just don't have that kind of brain. But thank you for the thought.

Hi Bkk.. I found your "confession of emotion" towards Maiyuu rather touching.. I do like the tone of your blog lately.. It reminds me of joy within simplicity. I wish you and Maiyuu a constant and continual comforting joy, as you two have now.. :)

Su: Thank you for your kind wishes.

Maiyuu and I do appear to be in a happy 'space' at the moment. Long may it last.
