Thai director Poj Anon trawled well-known secondary schools in Bangkok looking for handsome young men to play in his latest movie, a kathoey comedy about teen football players, called Taew Te Teen Rabert (แต๋วเตะตีนระเบิด).
The first word, taew, is slang for a guy with plenty of girl inside. The teen refers not to teens, but a crude word in Thai for foot. The last word is bomb, or explosion.
Gays with exploding feet? More likely a reference to superhot fem football players who are up for a girly fight on the football pitch.
A few months ago, Poj announced that he was looking for 13-15 year-olds to join his cast (see this earlier post). He found a cast of 30 youngsters, including two young women (see group shot above).
'We went looking at schools city-wide. The headmasters and teachers were great...they took us from classroom to classroom. We visited many schools, including Bangkok Christian, and Assumption College.
'We cast quite a few guys from Bangkok Christian, because they are so good-looking. We have real men [straight guys], gays, and two girls,' he said.
How did Poj (pictured in green) know that those two schools have so many good-lookers? Best not ask. The film, which is in production, is likely to be ready for an early New-Year release.
The cast also includes former members of the Thai national football team, and three other well-known names - Leena Jangjanja (who ran for Bangkok governor a month ago), Suchinda Chertchai, and 'Pui' Pimonwan.
The pictures above come from past Thai kathoey movies. They give you a taste of what Poj's movie will probably be like.
The stills were posted at the Pantip webboard by Poj fans, who remarked on the diverse roles which kathoey have taken in Thai movies - as volleyball players (Satree Lek), Muay Thai boxers (Beautiful Boxer)...
Poj told Khao Sod newspaper that he would like to make another couple of kathoey comedies - a sequel to his kathoey comedy horror, Hor Taw Taek, and another one called Toot Too Koo Chat (ตุ๊ดตู่กู้ชาติ).

I wish he wouldn't - he's such a dreadful director. And most ladyboy so called comedies are so badly scripted and over the top, they are almost anti-gay. Besides, does the world need another Iron Ladies? - Ian
hii ian, what do you mean about ladyboy is almost anti-gay?
is ladyboy hate gay people?
No, Ian does not mean that ladyboys hate gays, he is referring to the movie.
Movie comedies about Ladyboys are usually poorly scripted. You should watch them, it's pretty horrible. It's more about playing up to stereotypes than reality. He's saying these types of films makes fun of gays more than they support them.
It's true. If you watch lakorns (thai soap operas), gays are included for comedic relief, rarely do they take up serious parts in the lakorn. It's not all bad, they are very funny. I enjoy them.
Thanks Lyn. I think some directors use hysterical, stereotype ladyboys in the films to mock gays. I found Saving Private Tootsie, a great concept I thought before seeing it, to be almost homophobic. Another about a group of them robbing a bank was simply awful. I have great respect for ladyboys - its not easy to stand out as different even in tolerant Thailand. - Ian
Thai ladyboy movies have always been a hit in overseas.
Does anyone know the name of the films both stills are from?
