A fan of Thai actress 'Aum' Patcharapa says he now knows why 'Khem Ti Sip' - the television presenter who fell into a argument with Aum and another actress friend over a Mini Cooper car - is so confident in her English ability. Only she and a select few of her friends can understand her when she speaks!
In a bitchy message at the Pantip webboard, the fan recalls Khem's comments about how she took cover behind her superior English language skills when confronted by Aum and her friend May Feuangarom (or Fuengarom) in the Emporium carpark. The pair tried to make Khem leave the vehicle, which they believed was rightfully theirs.
Khem, who was driving the car on loan from her former boyfriend, says she was scared by the encounter. The pair tried to stop her leaving, and forced open the car doors, she says. From inside the car, she hurriedly called a friend, and spoke to her in English, as she was sure the actress pair would not understand.
Thais who heard her explanation of events in the carpark said they were upset at the way Khem (pictured) looked down on Aum and May, because they supposedly lacked her prowess in English.
The Pantip poster, who admits he is a fan of Aum, says he wonders why Khem passed up the opportunity to interview two foreign guests who speak English when Tee Sip, the variety show which she co-presents, aired last night.
Thanyaras (or Thanyarat) Jirapatpakon, crowned Miss International Queen 2007 in Pattaya the other night, appeared with runners-up Chanel Madrigal, of the Philippines, and Aleika Barros, of Brazil (pictured).
Instead, the job of interviewing the runners-up in English fell to the main presenter, Witawat Suntornwineth.
Later in the same programme, she was given another opportunity to impress with her English skills when Witawat turned to discuss the formal engagement of Tata Young and boyfriend Prem.
Witawat showed the pink invitation handed out to guests, which included a poem in English. Khem could have read out or translated the poem, too, but once again just sat there and said nothing while Witawat did all the work.
'Finally, I understand why Khem was so confident that they would not understand what she said! In last night's Tee Sip, two foreign kathoey (ladyboy) guests were invited on the show, but I didn't see Khem interview them - or is that that the English she speaks can only be understood by herself and the one she called [on the phone]. No wonder Aum and May weren't able to get it!'
People who left messages in response said the job of interviewing foreign guests normally falls to Witawat, as the main presenter. Possibly it's seen as a more prestigious job.
Others said that, given the fuss over her comments about her English ability, Khem may have chosen to say nothing. If she had spoken English, her critics would say she was showing off.
Aum, interviewed this week after he return from a brief trip to Europe, said Khem's remarks about her poor English said more about Khem than they did about her. They cast the whole education institution into a bad light, by suggesting schools and universities were no good at teaching Thais to speak English.
One poster said that as soon as he heard Aum say that, he went right off her. In dragging the education system into the affair as a supposed ally, she was trying to find new enemies for Khem, when the whole affair should have blown over by now.
Postscript: Want to see more of the lovely Thanyaras? Here is an interview in English from the Manager newspaper, about her win in Pattaya the other night.
Tee Sip's Witawat said she was so beautiful that she was almost born into the wrong sex. Thanyaras disagreed, saying that if she had been born a woman instead, she would not have had the chance to stand on that stage, representing kathoey worldwide.
Thanyaras, who says she now wants to knuckle down and finish her university degree, was also crowned Miss Tiffany's Universe 2007. You can read more about her in these earlier posts, here.
